Making Screen Changes for Your Family
January 26, 2023 - 32 min

How has the screen influenced your family? On one hand, you may say you want to spend less time on your phone, but actually following through is quite difficult. Screens have infiltrated every area of our lives: communication, work email, directions, Uber, grocery orders, Amazon Prime, apps for your kids, and the list goes on. So, how does a family actually make changes when it comes to screens?

Josh recently deleted a majority of the apps on his phone, practically turning his iPhone into a flip phone. In this episode, Josh and Christi talk about the ways it has been life-giving for their family and share practical ways you can make similar changes.

Josh and Christi talk about:

  • The research on "continuous partial attention" and how it's increasing anxiety in our kids
  • How to let go of the hurry and allow yourself to be inconvenienced in difficult, but freeing, ways
  • Simply acting on your decisions and adjusting your life according to those decisions

Adventure: Creating Life-Giving Experiences for Your Family
January 12, 2023 - 23 min
The everyday mundane has a knack for keeping us comfortable. Before long, we forget to take risks, do something out of our comfort zone, or prioritize activities that actually bring us life. That's why we felt it fitting for the final episode of our Words That Matter for Your Family series to end with the word "adventure." When was the last time your family did something adventurous?

In this episode, we talk about:
  • How thinking, feeling, and relating all at the same time influences brain growth
  • The reward of saying "yes" to a hobby, risk, or decision that challenges you
  • How "adventure" helps your kids internalize their faith and love others well

Purpose: How to Live On Purpose, Not By Accident, As a Family
January 5, 2023 - 35 min
There is a hard truth we all have to come to grips with: If you don't get intentional about the direction of your family, the culture will decide it for you. A culture that values individual achievement at the expense of the family unit results in families who are exhausted, fragmented, and directionless. But what if each individual's purpose in life was meant to be discovered, not outside the home, but within it? And what could this look like for your family?

In this episode, we continue the Words That Matter for Your Family series, by talking about the word "purpose" and how your family can live on purpose, not by accident.

We talk about:
• The one question that matters more than any other to determine if you’re really living on purpose
• How our values lead to our purpose
• Specific ways we (the Straub’s) live on purpose in our family
• How to cultivate your heart, make your inner circle smaller, and become more "weird"

Can we be teachable when it's tempting to be offendable? How we respond as adults may very well be what we cultivate with our kids.

As we continue the Words That Matter for Your Family series, this week we talk about the word "teachable" and why it matters for your family.

We talk about:
  • The interconnectedness of teachability and calm
  • How and why saying sorry to your kids is the gift that keeps on giving
  • How to let go of self protection when your spouse points out a flaw

December 8, 2022 - 39 min

- The "I do, we do, you do" model of kids learning to do things on their own
- The patience it requires to let your kids try things on their own
