In his early thirties, experienced seaman Samuel Champlain joined the crew aboard the ‘Saint-Julien’ on his first Trans-Atlantic crossing. This journey lasted two years and gave Champlain the opportunity to learn about Spanish holdings from the Caribbean to Mexico City. Along the way, he took detailed notes, wrote an illustrated report on what he learned on this trip, and gave this secret account—entitled ‘Narrative of a Voyage to the West Indies and Mexico 1599 to 1601’—to his King, Henry the fourth, who rewarded Champlain with an annual pension. Frontenac (1622-98) was a French aristocrat, soldier and Governor General of New France in North America. He established a number of Forts on the shores of the Great Lakes and engaged in a series of battles against the English and the Iroquois Confederacy for control of the fur trade. Governor Frontenac's initiatives helped solidify French claims and influence stretching from Lake Superior to the Mississippi River, pushing French territorial boundaries along the future American-Canadian border and further into the interior of North America. The USS Huron was an iron-hulled gunboat of the United States Navy; a screw steamer with full-rig auxiliary sail, built in Pennsylvania and commissioned in 1875. The Huron ran aground off Nags Head, North Carolina in heavy weather, and was wrecked. At first, her crew worked in relatively little danger, attempting to free their ship, but she soon heeled over, carrying 98 officers and men to their deaths. I was honored to lend my voice to help revive and celebrate the epic tale of an American naval hero involved in this tragedy, as part of The BackTracker History Show.
