The Debate Surrounding Biblical Inerrancy
March 21, 2023 - 53 min
For evangelical Christians, it's no secret that the Bible is at the center of just about everything we do. We believe it is God-breathed, inspired, and that it is the measuring rod by which we evaluate all moral and spiritual claims.  But is it inerrant?  As follow up questions go, this feels like an easy "yes." Nevertheless, biblical inerrancy has long been a feature of debate among Bible-believing Christians. Not because some Christians are arguing that the Bible contains errors, but because of the interpretive assumptions often bound up in the term "biblical inerrancy." In this episode, we explore the history surrounding the discussion of biblical inerrancy, the famous Chicago Statement on Biblical Inerrancy, and whether this particular framework is the best way to understand the message and authority of Scripture.  READ FULL SHOW NOTES HERE Visit kainosproject.com to find other resources to help you tackle ancient truths in everyday settings, and be sure to subscribe to our email list to get all of our fresh content delivered straight to your inbox.Subscribe on Apple PodcastsFollow on SpotifySee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Are ChatGPT and AI Going To Take Over the World?
March 14, 2023 - 52 min
A recent development in technology has some people on edge, as the field of artificial intelligence continues to advance in its efforts to create ever smarter technology. ChatGPT, perhaps the most sophisticated chatbot ever created, was launched in Nov. 2022 and was trained on a dataset of an estimated 300 billion words. Users simply type in their question or prompt into the dialogue box, and ChatGPT provides a response. Many of them are quite impressive.  So impressive, in fact, that some content creators and marketers are beginning to worry if their jobs are in jeopardy.  Even more fundamentally, as artificial intelligence starts to "feel" more human, many have begun to question what it actually means to be a human created in the image of God.  In this episode, we explore the ways in which artificial intelligence has become a part of our everyday lives, as well as dive into the question of what makes humanity unique in God's eyes.

Sex as an Icon for Salvation?
March 7, 2023 - 57 min
Last week, a now-deleted article published by The Gospel Coalition about sex became the cause of controversy and concern. In that article, which was an excerpt from Josh Butler's forthcoming book, titled "Beautiful Union: How God's Vision for Sex Points Us to the Good, Unlocks the True, and (Sort of) Explains Everything," Butler argues that sex "is an icon of Christ and the church." Shortly after the article was published, some began calling into question both the suggestive nature of Butler's language, which includes the claim that "Christ penetrates his church," as well as the overall thesis of the excerpt, which many found to be problematic in the way that it reinforces power dynamics that are often present in situations of spiritual and sexual abuse.  In this episode, we survey how others have responded to the article. We also evaluate its content, discussing why so many people have legitimate concerns with it.
Was the SBC Wrong To Kick out Saddleback?
February 28, 2023 - 45 min
On Tuesday, February 21, the Southern Baptist Convention Executive Committee announced that Saddleback Church was no longer "in friendly cooperation" with the denomination and had been disfellowshipped.  Famously founded by Rick Warren, Saddleback had long been the largest church in the SBC. Nevertheless, they were removed from the denomination because they have ordained women on their staff to the title of "pastor," one of whom is in the regular weekend service preaching rotation.  Was the SBC within their rights, or are they out of pocket on this one?  In this episode, we discuss the story that led up to Saddleback's ousting from the SBC, the theological questions involved, as well as how this news has been received, particularly in light of how the SBC has been slow to move on reform in light of sexual abuse scandals.
The Asbury Revival: Are We Seeing a Move of God?
February 21, 2023 - 49 min
On the morning of Wednesday, February 8, something unexpected happened on the campus of Asbury University in Wilmore, Kentucky.  A chapel service was held for students, one that we imagine was much like any other, apart from one detail: it just never ended. When a group of students spontaneously stayed back to pray, something began to stir. In the days that would follow, the campus would be marked by around the clock prayer and worship.  As news began to spread, people from around the country flocked to the school to catch a glimpse of what was taking place. Some began proclaiming that a revival had broken out. Many Christians have expressed excitement at what appears to be a move of the Holy Spirit. Others have been characteristically skeptical.  In this episode, we discuss what is being called the Asbury revival, along with the varied responses to it. We also dive into the question of what a Christian revival actually is and whether what is happening at Asbury University bears resemblance to revivals of old.  Visit kainosproject.com to find other resources to help you tackle ancient truths in everyday settings, and be sure to subscribe to our email list to get all of our fresh content delivered straight to your inbox.Subscribe on Apple PodcastsFollow on SpotifySee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
The Christian History of Valentine's Day
February 14, 2023 - 39 min
Today is Valentine's Day, perhaps the greatest holiday that corporate America ever successfully commercialized!  But while Valentine's Day has become a day for exchanging cards, chocolates, flowers, and sometimes even jewelry, the holiday actually has deep roots in Christian tradition––namely in the story of Saint Valentine.  In this episode, we dive into the history of who Saint Valentine was, why his contribution to the Christian church was important, and what his story of martyrdom means for how we live as followers of Jesus today. A Fresh Look at Old Liturgy
February 7, 2023 - 48 min
If you grew up in low church evangelical spaces like we did, liturgy might not have featured heavily in your spiritual upbringing. In fact, you may not be familiar with it at all. Liturgical elements in worship services include things like call and response prayers, corporate recitations of key biblical passages, creeds, or blessings, or communion as a central part of gathered worship. While many Protestant denominations practice elements of liturgy, many evangelicals have tended to shy away from them. That is, until recently, as younger evangelicals have begun to express renewed interest in some of these ancient practices. In this episode, we discuss the history of liturgy and liturgical practices, why they are so compelling, their benefits, as well as how uncritically adopting some of these practices may be accompanied by pitfalls. The One Thing All Christians Agree On
January 31, 2023 - 45 min
It's no secret that we live in divided times. This is true of our culture at large, but it's also true within the church. Further, the things that divide us can often be so personal and painful that they keep us from even seeing people on the other side of the disagreement as fellow Christians. But as we look to history, even with all our historic misdeeds against one another, there is one document (apart from the New Testament) that all faithful Christians, whether Protestant, Roman Catholic, or Eastern Orthodox, can agree on. It's what's known as the Apostles' Creed. In this episode, we take a look at the Apostles' Creed, what it says, how we got it, and why it matters to our faith today. Is Anxiety 'Temporary Atheism'?
January 24, 2023 - 44 min
It has often been said in Christian circles that anxiety is "temporary atheism." But is that true? In this episode, we take a look at what the Bible has to say about anxiety, and whether what the biblical authors are referring to when they use the word translated as "anxiety" is the same thing that we refer today when we speak about anxeity as a clinical diagnosis. Our hope is to interpret these passage of Scripture in context, as well as in a way that does not inflict more harm on those who are already struggling with their mental health.
