I am a child of the 90s, and I vividly remember going to a True Love Waits rally where the speaker held up beautiful rose and slowly began tearing its petals off one by one until there was nothing but an ugly stump left. Of course, this was meant to illustrate what happens to our hearts when we choose to give ourselves away over and over before marriage, but there was always something about that image that didn't sit well with me. Why? Because it completely leaves out God's ability to redeem and restore things that are dead. Many people who were influenced by this message have come forward saying it hurt them more than it helped them. Because of that, I wanted to take a deep look at how it has affected us as women, and what the true message of the Bible is about purity...so we can teach our children what's true and good, and so that we can find healing if we need it. Prayer is relationship with God. But prayer is also a way we can fight battles.   Years ago, God showed me that I had been fighting against my sons. I wanted to be on their team...and I wanted them to know and feel like we were on the same team. God showed me that praying for them was literal war on their behalf. Somehow, God uses our prayers to further His will, so praying for our children, for those we love, is fighting FOR them instead of against them. This is still one of the most powerful lessons God ever taught me, and I continue to believe that my prayers for my children have and will shape their lives because God asked me to do it. The answers to those prayers, may not always look the way I envisioned, but I believe God isn't finished. So often, the reason we lack peace in our lives...the kind that stays with us through the best of times and the very worst of times, is because we haven't built a firm foundation. And no matter how many times I hear people say, "please don't tell me I need to spend time in God's Word...I don't need another item on my to-do list..." the reality is that there's only one way to build a strong relationship with God...and that's through the reading of, study of, and praying through God's Word. It requires time to to understand and know God's Word. It requires even more time to know it to the point that when the storms hit, our reflex is to turn TOWARD it, not away from it. Most women allow their challenges to keep them from pressing in to Jesus. Many of us...maybe most of us...myself included...tend to take our eyes off of Jesus just when we need to focus in on Jesus the most. When the storms are raging around us, we need to press in to the truths of God's Word, the character of God, the promises of God that are all fulfilled in His Son, Jesus.
