This world hurts. People mistreat, betray, and abandon us; the economy, at times, sideswipes us; and eventually, our health and vitality will fail. Jesus never promised us a pain-free life. But He did promise to stand with us through every storm, to bring beauty to our greatest hardships, and to one day bring us to a place of eternal rest where sickness, dysfunction, and death won’t exist. In the meantime, we hold tight to His promises, knowing His truth and grace will give us all we need to stand firm even when it feels like our world is spinning out of control. Jesus told us to expect trouble but He also assured us we have all we need in Him to overcome. Everything feels easier when we sense God is guiding us. But what do we do when it seems as if God isn’t responding to our prayers? When we think of God’s promise to provide for us, we often think in terms of physical things like food, clothing, and shelter. But if we search the Bible, we find that He promises us other things as well, things like rest and peace and guidance. When it feels like our needs aren’t being met, we can be still, look around us, and find that God is present and providing, even when it feels like nothing is going the way we think it should. Sadly, we live in an increasingly disconnected culture where many people are forced to endure the pain of loneliness. Others, perhaps having felt isolated in the past, have developed a strong fear of loneliness. Still others, due to previous wounds, have come to expect rejection and, out of fear of future hurt, remain in emotional hiding. If any of these scenarios resonate with you, be encouraged: God planted the need for connection deep within the human heart, which means He doesn’t want us to live disconnected and He invites us to trust Him to lead us to those with whom we can feel seen, known, and loved.
