The 95 Podcast: Conversations for Small-Church Pastors Episodes
PTSD And The Ministry (w/ Jon Sanders) - Episode 142
August 16, 2022 - 52 min
Dale returns the favor today by giving Caralee the week off as he talks with Jon Sanders about some of the things he learned recently at a special training in Mississippi called Tactical-Resilience Protocol (TRP) and Emotions-Management Process (EMP) from 22Zero.org. Although the focus was specifically on the effects of PTSD in first responders and the military, Jon helps us see how most pastors are dealing with the same kinds of emotional issues.

We dive into how trauma affects the nervous system requiring intentional focus to “put the trauma in its place.” Everyone has a basic fight, flight, freeze or fake response to ongoing traumatic situations. The honest transparency shared by Jon and Dale make this podcast one you’ll want to share with anyone working through emotional discouragement.

Why Men Hate Going To Church (w- David Murrow) - Episode 140
August 2, 2022 - 40 min
Have you ever wondered why it seems like there are always more women than men in the church? Studies show that the average Protestant church is around 61% female and 39% male. Quite the difference, huh?

During today's conversation, Jon and Caralee talk to author and video producer David Murrow about what causes men to fall away from the church and what we can do to draw them in again. Our goal at 95Network is to see churches not only grow but flourish. And to reach that goal, we need everyone's help—both men and women!

Leading Your Family: What It Looks Like For Men In Marriage (w/ John Michael Clark) - Episode 139
July 26, 2022 - 47 min
John Michael Clark is the executive pastor at Salt Church on the Chesapeake Bay of Virginia. He and his wife Natalie have always had a good marriage, but several years ago, God made it clear that He had better for them. When John Michael started searching for answers on how to make his marriage great, he came up short. It seemed like no one could tell him exactly how to lead his family well. That's why he started a ministry called The Family Captain.

Today, we're talking to John Michael about why men don't take responsibility for the leadership role in their homes, why filling that role is vital to marital and familial relationships, and what God has called us to do about it. Our conversation is an excellent resource for both men and women who want to grow their relationship with their spouses the way God intended.

How To Make Your Sermon Shareable (w: David Murrow)- Episode 137
July 12, 2022 - 42 min
At this point, most of us know that providing online access to sermons and Sunday services is imperative to reaching people inside and outside of the church. However, many pastors are still hesitant (or even unwilling) to go there. Today's guest, David Murrow, says that "online sermons are the church's welcome center." Currently, people "visit" churches by first finding them online, watching a few sermons, and then coming in person if they like what they've seen.

With this in mind, David has recently launched a coaching program to help churches improve their online presence. He's got some great ideas and resources available for pastors who are ready to dive into the online world. I hope you take away some great ideas to try for yourself!

Social Media As A Ministry And Not An Advertisement (w: Karis Hortin) - Episode 136
July 5, 2022 - 55 min
Karis Hortin is only 21 years old, but she's already lived a lot of life. Born in Ethiopia, she was raised by her grandmother until she was seven, when she entered an orphanage because her grandmother contracted HIV. At nine, she was adopted by an American family and began her life in the United States. Karis says that before she ever heard of God, she always felt like someone was looking out for her.

These days, she uses her faith, talent, and marketing expertise to help churches get their social media platforms off the ground. She's also a certified life coach for teen girls and has used her popular TikTok and YouTube accounts as a platform to tackle the complicated things that teens face these days. Oh, and did I mention she's a beauty queen running for Miss Illinois? Is there anything she can't do?!

Today, our conversation centers around social media for churches and why having an online presence is so crucial for the younger generation. Karis mentions how we should see social media as a ministry rather than an advertisement—a comment that holds so much truth. Listen in today, and reach out to us or Karis (link below) if you have any questions!

Creating An Intergenerational Culture In Your Church (w: Chuck Stecker) - Episode 135
June 28, 2022 - 53 min
"But you are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, His own special people, that you may proclaim the praises of Him who called you out of darkness into His marvelous light."   1 Peter 2:9 (NKJV)

Chuck Stecker is the founder of A Chosen Generation, and he believes that all generations, young and old, have something to contribute to the church. That's why his organization seeks to provide strategies and resources for leaders who want to strengthen the intergenerational culture of their churches.

Today, we're talking to Chuck about fostering a church culture that brings generations together. It's essential that the older generation (or the "encore generation," as Chuck calls it) stays active in the church. And we don't mean being involved in seniors-only ministries—we mean being involved in discipleship ministries with kids, students, teens, and young adults. The encore generation has so much to give! It's time that we encourage them to keep hold of their baton and continue their race.

Key Takeaways

1) As Dabo Swinney says, "There's nothing less important than the score at halftime." After 40, many of us pivot from pursuing success to pursuing significance. Over the years, Dale has learned that living a meaningful life looks more like loving God, loving family, and obeying what He's called us to do.

2) Jesus came to give us life. We can let our strivings cease and start living freely by knowing that we don't have to adhere to a particular set of rules just to measure up. Jesus loves you because He loves you. He doesn't love you because of what you've done, who you are, or how you perform.

3) God doesn't need our help. God can accomplish whatever He wants, and He certainly doesn't need us to do that. However, He wants a relationship with us. Let Him pursue you!

Bridging The Minority Gap With Intentional Relationships w Hykeng Paul Episode 133
June 14, 2022 - 53 min
In today’s episode, we’re catching up with Hykeng Paul, the Director of Unity and Diversity at Newspring Church here in South Carolina. As a black man who grew up in the AME church and then began attending a predominantly white church, Hykeng has a unique perspective on racial separation in congregations. He’s a wealth of knowledge about the history of the black church and what led us to where we are today.

During our conversation, Hykeng brings a welcome perspective to the table about why tackling this issue should be a priority in our churches and what we can do about it. He gives some practical first steps for pursuing unity—the first being just simply to start praying about it. Our open and honest conversation was a blessing to me, and I hope it will be to you.
