Simple Steps for Embodied Faith With Taylor Murray
October 26, 2023 - 35 min
If you have ever asked the question about what happens when your feelings conflict with your faith? You are not alone. Today I have the opportunity to share the mic with my friend, Taylor Murray as she shares her story of learning to reconnect with her body and faith in a new way.  We define embodiment as “being present in your body” and explore how we have learned disembodiment to survive. Additionally, we discuss the messages that have directly or indirectly taught us to deny emotions and distrust the body’s data. We then explore simple practices for developing awareness of the body, listening to the emotions as the pathway back to God and His presence.  Resources:  Find more from Taylor at: www.taylorjoymurray.co     Instagram: @__taylorjoy__   ASK CARLEY!Do you have a question or topic you want to be discussed on a future Q+A episode? Naming Spiritual Abuse and Its Impact on Faith
October 12, 2023 - 32 min
What is Spiritual abuse and how do you know if you have experienced religious trauma? This two-part interview with Dr. Charles Kiser explores the subtle yet significant ways unhealthy church cultures impact our experiences of God, self, and others. Today’s episode discusses and defines terms from Charles’ book Trauma-informed Evangelism that help put language to the stories and lived experiences of moral injury, spiritual abuse, and spiritual trauma. We will identify and distinguish the experiences that have left so many people hurting and harmed by toxic forms of spirituality and provide supportive encouragement to those walking through the recovery process.  Resources:  https://www.charleskiser.com https://www.storylinecommunity.com Trauma-informed Evangelism  ASK CARLEY!Do you have a question or topic you want to be discussed on a future Q+A episode? Befriending and Blessing Our Brokenness
September 28, 2023 - 14 min
Today’s episode is part three of a series The Story of Our Bodies. We are looking at the process of befriending and blessing the brokenness that cannot be denied. We discuss the danger of black-and-white perspectives of spirituality which do not account for the complexity and coexistence held within our stories. With the help of Henri Nouwen’s wisdom, we will walk through the practices of befriending pain and placing the whole story back under the blessing. Finally, we discuss simple exercises for increasing embodied living that reclaim our belovedness. As Henri Nouwen so beautifully puts it, “We are chosen, blessed, broken, so that we may be given.”  Resources:  Life of the Beloved by Henri Nouwen  To Be Told by Dr. Dan Allender  Theology of the Body - Jean-Claude Larchet Reclaiming the Body in Christian Spirituality —Thomas Ryan Scripture to Read This Week:  John 8:1-11; John 5:1-15; Luke 8:43-48 ASK CARLEY!Do you have a question or topic you want to be discussed on a future Q+A episode? How Trauma and Shame Impact Our Bodies
September 21, 2023 - 20 min
This week on the podcast we continue our series on The Story of Our Bodies by discussing the impact of trauma as a result of the Fall, which has led to brokenness emotionally, physically, relationally, and spiritually. What Is Trauma? First, we will explore the underpinnings of trauma. Trauma can be seen as an imprint of distressing events on the body. We'll explain how trauma plays out in experiences of shame and various emotions such as fear, anger, depression, grief, and anxiety. The First Step to Healing From Shame and Trauma Finally, this episode seeks to bring understanding to the importance of awareness of the stories of shame as the first step to healing. An invitation is made to reclaim our wholeness by naming and examining the stories of shame in our lived experiences, as held in our bodies.   Highlighted Therapeutic Practice: The Genesis Examine  1. A Vision for Embodied Theology: 3 Truths of Embodiment Theology
September 14, 2023 - 27 min
Today’s episode is part 1 of a 3-part series on the story of our bodies. When we return to the story our bodies have carried over the years, we are invited into a journey of processing the past and reclaiming the goodness God intended for our bodies to bring to the world around us. Yet, for many, we forget the beautiful beginning our bodies tell. So, this is where I want to start. Returning to our beginning, the origin of our body is blessed and designed to reflect our Maker. We do this so that we can have a clear vision and reminder as we process the past in future episodes. This episode outlines three foundational truths that can help develop a grounded sense of embodiment and start rewriting the story of our bodies. Three truths of embodiment theology that help me rewrite the story of my body:1. Imago Dei 2. Temple of God 3. Spirit Indwelled Questions for Reflection: 1. What makes you unique from those around you?  2. What relationships in your life promote unity and reciprocity?  3. How does temple language feel to your body?  4. When you think about God’s presence being with you how does that feel? 5. Do you see the Spirit as empowering, comforting, or confusing?  6. How might you begin to attune to the spirit and resource more awareness of God’s presence in you?  Resources for Further Study: Reciprocating Self by Balswick and Balswick  Fearfully and Wonderfully Made by Dr. Paul Brand & Philip Yancy  “Imago Dei” PBS Definition  Scripture to Study This Week:Genesis 1:27-28; John 1; John 17; 1 Corinthians 3:23; 1 Peter 2; I John 4  ASK CARLEY!Do you have a question or topic you want to be discussed on a future Q+A episode? What Is Embodiment and Why Does it Matter?
September 7, 2023 - 13 min
Welcome to a new season of Therapy and Theology, where we explore relevant topics related to faith, feelings, and spiritual formation. This season we are diving into exploring the term embodiment and its importance in our lives emotionally, relationally, and spiritually.  Today’s episode seeks to provide a definition for the exploration of Embodiment as the interactive perspective of personhood that seeks to reclaim the body as a central aspect of humanity. In this introduction to the season, we ask some initial questions: Why does it Matter?  What makes it difficult?  What are we to do?  My prayer for this season is that we would seek to attune to our bodies and remind our bodies that healthy attachments with others and God are built on authenticity and communication. I hope this episode invites you to join me on this journey of what it means to connect to our bodies and learn from it again.  Sources:  The Wisdom of Your Body - Hilary McBride  The Body Keeps the Score - Bessel van der Kolk Mind Sight - Daniel Seigel  Strong Like Water - Aundi Kolber  ASK CARLEY!Do you have a question or topic you want to be discussed on a future Q+A episode? 4 Common Christian Cliches and What the Bible Says about Them
June 1, 2023 - 26 min
In the final episode of the season and series on deconstructing distortions, we will take a look at 4 common Christian sayings and how they may be doing more harm than good. Often based on scriptural principles and well-meaning intentions, comments of encouragement or moral evaluations seem to create a feeling of invalidation and shame to those receiving them.  To help us navigate the delivery and maintain our intention, this episode seeks to re-establish gospel conversations with an understanding of grace, self-reflection, and empathy. We will deconstruct statements like: “Love the sinner, hate the sin” and God will work things for your good” by looking back to scripture and discussing the many simple ways we can better communicate the truth of God’s Word in love. Let’s move from simple cliches to gospel conversations.  Resources:  Emotionally Healthy Spirituality by Pete Scazzero  Live No Lies by John Mark Commer  Letters to the Church by Francis Chan Unquestioned Answers  by  Dr Jeff Myers  Discover more Christian podcasts at lifeaudio.com and inquire about advertising opportunities at lifeaudio.com/contact-us.
