The conversation with my cousin, Dr. David Wall Rice, was very much like him, incredible! David graduated from Morehouse College with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology and earned a Doctorate in Personality Psychology from Howard University. He earned his Masters degree in Journalism from Columbia University and postdoctoral study at Teachers College, Columbia University.  My little cousin is doing BIG things! He has worked with companies including The Coca-Cola Company, the NFL, Polo by Ralph Lauren, Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation; and has provided commentary for C-SPAN, NPR, CBS News, CNN, MSNBC. His writings and opinions have appeared in The Washington Post, Vibe Magazine, The Los Angeles Times and The New York Times Magazine among other media outlets. David's writing is also represented in the Cornell Hip Hop Collection as part of the Adler Hip Hop Archive. David explains that his wife, Mikki, has a major role in all that what he has accomplished. She is loving, encouraging, and pushes him to greater heights. Mikki also mother’s their two sons, Biko and Stokely, who are amazing young men in their own rite. Repentance changes our path, our direction, as well as the outcome. And so does the lack there of. When we live with a disregard to what He expects from us, life is a shambles. When we live to give God the glory, honoring the Holy Spirit and being lead by His word, then life is grand! A simple apology is not enough. Being and living remorsefully are crucial. One of the most powerful blessings bestowed on us from God was our ability to pray, and His power to answer our prayers. Unfortunately, many do not know the power of prayer. Although I had not always prayed when I was growing up, I do so earnestly today. There are a number of times throughout my life where prayer was an absolute necessity; attempted suicide, injuries, surgeries, DUI, drugs, fighting, cheating, reckless behavior, and much more. My son, William’s birth, was another time to pray. Our community and beyond prayed for Baby William. Despite doctors promising doom if we did not terminate his existence, William walks, talks, goes to high school, and enjoys playing basketball, baseball, and bowling immensely.  God always gives us more than we ask for. I pray lots, and I am blessed beyond measure. I am Billy Yancey. This message is not to call someone out, or bring hurt in any way. Only to make you aware that hurtful language exists, and it is not ok. Most importantly, we must recognize it and extricate it from our lives, or it will repeat forever. When we eliminate the negative, toxic, harmful pieces from our lives, God repairs us and fills in the gaps with love, happiness, and abundance. God showers us with His glory. I have known Captain Chris Thompson since 1979! We were in the 5th grade together. We attended Landon School, NAPS, and then the U.S. Naval Academy together. Although our starting points were identical, our paths and journeys were very different. Chris was praying daily in the Rotunda Chapel at the Naval Academy, while I was running around town. Chris was a tremendous student-athlete. He grew up in Washington D.C., taking two city buses along with the Landon School bus to get to and from home every day. This did not stop him from being captain of the tennis team who dominated in the classroom and on the tennis court! Chris took his ability to lead along with his grit and tenacity onto Annapolis, MD to help prepare him for the rigors of being an officer in the U.S. Navy. After completing Supply Corp School in Atlanta, Georgia, he was soon attached to the USS INDEPENDENCE CV-62 from 1993-1995. Following serving on the USS INDEPENDENCE, over the next 28 years Chris successfully led in various positions on sea and land. Finally, retiring from active duty, completing 31 years of service in June of 2021. Today, retired Captain Chris Thompson is Director of Supply Chain for Winland Foods in Oakbrook, IL. He is married with three kids, still playing competitive tennis, and living a life dedicated to giving God the glory. I am Billy Yancey. A close friend of mine left us to be with Jesus in 2015. His wife and daughter, both with whom he had absolutely incredible relationships, still grieve today. His name was Wayne Speelman. He lived and spread God’s glory through his love, acts of kindness, and faith and commitment to Jesus Christ. His favorite scripture was, “He must become greater; I must become less.”-John 3:30 NIV Wayne lived His word everyday, sun or rain, up or down. I was blessed to have a conversation with his daughter, Brianna. She is an amazing young lady with incredible faith, drive, work ethic, determination, and love for others. The apple did not fall far from the tree. Wayne lives through his daughter! Brianna gives credit to both mom and dad. “There is no expiration day on missing somebody”, she says. I am Billy Yancey. Temptation can be enticing and costly when we are not careful.  Whether attracted by money, drugs, sex, or alcohol, the consequences can be crippling. THE DEVIL IS A LIAR! Beware! “He prowls like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour.” -1Peter 5:8 He will do anything to make us go left, when God provides for us to go right. Many years ago while playing football with the Silver Spring Boys Club, I slipped and fell and soon ended up in the emergency room. After hours of waiting and X-rays, I found out my finger was broken. I fell apart. I could not play again for 3 weeks! Since then, I found myself totally broken a few times over the years. Some of you have experienced brokenness. As believers, we know that through the Holy Spirit, our brokenness can be fixed permanently forever. God ain’t no joke! I am Billy Yancey. God is THE GOAT!
