The Walk: Real Stories of Faith

Natalie Layne grew up in Colorado watching her parents lead worship together, her mom singing and her dad on bass, while she ran around the rehearsals singing along. Her parents never pushed piano on her. They put a little keyboard in the playroom with her toys, said nothing, and let her discover it. She decided it was the coolest toy in the house, and started lessons at three. Her grandmother, who ran a piano studio for thirty years, was her first teacher and taught her to read music, to play by ear, and to write songs. By twelve, her church was asking her to lead worship, and she spent high school leading several times a week under worship pastors including Cory Asbury, John Egan and Jared Anderson. Kurtis asks what made that mentorship work, and her answer is one worship leaders will want to hear. We tend to think discipling someone means handing them a ten-step plan and all our best nuggets. What actually shaped her was simpler: they invited her into what they were already doing. Come to the writing camp. Come sing BGVs. Sit in on this meeting. It's not as hard as we think, she says. It's just the invite. Her grandmother also gave her the first songwriting method she ever used. At ten or eleven, she was told to come back next week with a song, protested that she didn't know how, and was told to take the words of Scripture and put chords underneath them. The Psalms were meant to be songs anyway. She still writes that way, because those words don't return void. She's also firm that writer's block isn't real: you may not be able to write something good today, but you can always write something bad, and the point is to show up. When the piano runs dry she switches to guitar just to change the palette. Her sound came from the car stereo. Her mom played Christian radio; her dad, a bass player, played gospel, jazz, blues and Earth, Wind & Fire. She remembers wondering young why Christian music didn't have all those styles, and deciding that a God who contains multitudes should have all the music, and the best of it. The road to a label was not a straight one. Nashville told her it was a ten-year town, or maybe five. It took five years, almost to the day. She stayed at Belmont long enough to finish a master's in piano, and in her final year won the school's Christian showcase, where labels quietly scout. Several reached out in 2019. Then March 2020 hit and every conversation stopped, and she spent a confusing season asking why God seemed to fling doors open only to shut them. What she did with the waiting is the practical heart of the episode. She spent two years in practice rooms, started sharing verses and choruses on a new app called TikTok while she was still writing them, and let people weigh in. It turned into a giant online co-write. People started asking her to come play shows, and she built a real career with a manager and no label, reaching her one definition of success: doing music for a living. When she did sign with Centricity, about four years after that first conversation, it was to add radio and marketing to something already moving. That's also how "Grateful For" happened. She wrote it with Mitch Wong, who told her the chords she was playing sounded like gratitude. Her team thought it was fine. The internet disagreed, and it became a small thankfulness movement. Kurtis names joy as the thread through her music, and Natalie explains where it came from. Right when she signed, she felt the Lord tell her to go write a whole bunch of songs about joy. It was the first direction that specific she'd ever felt, and she connects it to the moment, with everyone carrying heartbreak after the last few years. But she's careful about what joy is. We say choose joy, and that's true, but we slide into thinking we have to manufacture it or put on a smile. Joy is a fruit of the Spirit, not of our own striving. If she wants more joy, she needs more of the Spirit. That's why the songs aren't only about joy when life is easy, but about how to have it when it's hard. The new EP, Still Running To You, pulls in more of her childhood influences, horns included, because God deserves all the instruments. She produced for the first time, explaining it as the movie director of the record, and insisted on tracking it live, nine players in one room, which she says is rare in Nashville now that most parts get sent back and forth from home studios. Asked about AI, she's measured. She doesn't think it's all evil, but she loves real music, and thinks AI is only going to make real music and live shows more precious. People have already left comments asking whether her new songs are AI. They aren't. She closes with the difference between opening for someone and headlining her own night, her band of friends she grew up with at church, three trips to Bonnaroo, and the National Hot Dog Festival, where most of the crowd was holding a hot dog or an ear of corn and still heard about Jesus. At festivals, she says, people come for the groove and end up getting Jesus in the lyric. Tauren Wells has four boys under fourteen, a church he planted two years ago, a book, and a live album arriving October 2. Asked how he balances it, he says he gave up on balance a long time ago. What he chases instead is rhythm and discernment about the season he's actually in. He puts it this way: he's spent stretches of his life looking like a man in a fur coat at the fireworks on the Fourth of July, doing the right thing in the wrong season. The call to plant a church came in 2006, while he was still in Bible college. What followed was seventeen years of waiting. He got married in 2011, served on staff at his in-laws' church in Houston, left his band in 2015 expecting to do music as a hobby, and then found himself on tour with Lionel Richie and Mariah Carey. He served five years at Lakewood as a pastoral worship leader. God gave him the name Whitestone in 2016 and the full vision with it, but no city. Austin came in 2022. When he asked his wife's cousin why so many things in town carried the name, he learned that Austin sits on Texas limestone, and that limestone is called white stone. Church of Whitestone launched January 28, 2024. Then Kurtis, a church planter himself, asks for the part that doesn't make the Instagram page. Tauren calls it battles and blessings. On the morning they announced the church in Georgetown, it rained all day, the radar opened for exactly two hours, and 4,000 people showed up for Good Friday. In the hotel room beforehand, one of his sons had a health scare out of nowhere. Stretch that over two years, he says, and you get a sense of it. About a year ago he came close to his first panic attack, convinced he was alone in a way no one could relate to, which he now names as a lie. On the other side of the ledger: over a thousand people have given their lives to Jesus in two years, nearly a thousand baptisms, more than a million dollars given to missions, and average attendance around 2,400 across four services. That leads into what may be the heart of the episode, the power of your yes. Tauren wrote a song that didn't make the album with the line "you have my yes, you have my here am I, Lord send me." He says it's the constant posture of a Jesus follower and you never graduate from it. Yesterday's yes doesn't cover today's assignment. And the yes usually isn't a thousand baptisms; it's forgiving the person you've been bitter toward, or having the conversation you've been avoiding. On collaboration, he traces a real shift in himself. He grew up in a culture that rewarded individual achievement, and long believed the highest statement was "I did it." He now calls that a poison to purpose, and reframes the question from "what's in it for me" to "what's in me for this." He wanted the record to be the church rather than himself, so it started with the people already around him, Whitestone worship pastor Demetri Wells and longtime collaborator Davies., both of whom moved their families to Austin, before it ever grew to include Tasha Cobbs Leonard, Israel Houghton, Naomi Raine, Paul and Hannah McClure, Abbie Gamboa, Todd Galberth, Tiffany Hudson, Hulvey and Red Rocks Worship. He also makes a point of the people you never see: God, he says, has a very deep bench. The leadership section is worth the episode on its own. Tauren preaches 30 to 36 times a year and has led worship maybe four times in two and a half years, describing himself as the church mascot and the number one worship leader on the front row. He explains why the frequency of feedback determines the health of a church, and walks through the hard power and soft power framework he credits to Erwin McManus and Rich Wilkerson Jr. Hard power is "shut out the light." Soft power gets the same result through inference and suggestion. Whitestone aims for 90% soft power, so the remaining 10% has relational equity behind it. It closes at Austin City Limits Moody Theater the night before the recording. The room went to the floor during "Bless Your Name." Tasha Cobbs Leonard was singing, Lorna began to pray and cry out in tongues, and Tauren describes it as a war cry going out from the heart of Austin. He believes God sent the Levites into one of the most creatively iconic cities in America. On the record you can hear him shouting to fill the room with the sound, then the city. Tommy Coomes and Jay Truax were there. Not adjacent to the Jesus Movement, not students of it, but in it, on the beach, in the room. They're two of the founding members of Love Song, and this conversation is the long version of how a handful of California musicians accidentally became the front end of an entire industry. Jay starts at the beginning. He was an inland surfer who helped build the first skateboards out of plywood and cut-up roller skates on his dad's bandsaw. He talked his father into a guitar instead of a trumpet, got a 1957 Strat from a pawn shop for ninety dollars, and traded it in 1963 for a brand new Fender Jazz bass. Two weeks later his band opened for the Beach Boys in a skating rink, and Brian Wilson asked to borrow the bass. Jay was fifteen. Then came the surfing, the LSD, a string of bands, and two years in Salt Lake City playing alongside the Grateful Dead and Creedence. Tommy played trumpet for fourteen years, formed a band, and within six months all three of them were drafted at the height of Vietnam. Fred Field went to Vietnam. Chuck Butler went to South Korea. Tommy went to Germany, where he got deep into drugs mostly out of loneliness. He spent his leave in London and was standing on Carnaby Street the day Apple released its first four singles, with "Hey Jude" blasting out of every doorway. He came home in early 1969 planning to quit music and get a real job. Then friends dragged him to see a band called Love Song at a bar in Costa Mesa, and somewhere in a song he decided he couldn't quit after all. The heart of it is what happened next, and how little of it was planned. Tommy invokes the opening of 1 John, this is what we saw, this is what we heard, and calls himself and Jay living witnesses, noting that the generation who can say that is thinning out. Jay's account of the Holy Spirit is the plainest thing in the episode: it comes about when you pull the plug on everything and stop getting in the way. They woke up with no idea what the day held and played three times a day, in jails, convalescent homes, high schools, two services at the Orange County jail. Jay compares it to being firemen. The phone rang and they went. They tell it without polishing it. There's the Seventh Day Adventist church where they had no idea the congregation was vegetarian until Fred gave his testimony about being delivered from vegetarianism. There's Madison Square Garden one week and a flatbed truck on the Rio Grande in El Paso the next, which is where Tommy lands one of the best lines in the episode about being the same person in front of sixteen people or fifty thousand. There's Calvary Chapel going from a room the fire marshal capped around 220 to 2,500 people in a matter of months, with local pastors turning up in white belts to see what was going on. Then Maranatha! Music, which is the part worship leaders will want. Chuck Smith sent them to a four-track studio in Huntington Beach. The compilation cost four thousand dollars, sold 160,000 copies with no distribution, and the records lived in a Sunday school room. Michael W. Smith found a copy in a used clothing store in West Virginia, took it home, and walked the aisle of his Baptist church six weeks later. Twenty years on, Tommy asked Chuck Smith why he'd started the label. The answer: because the band had no gas money and he figured an album to sell would get them home. Kurtis asks about Chuck Fromm, who founded Worship Leader, and the two of them light up. Chuck Smith's nephew, called down from a city administration job in Yuba City to run Maranatha!, a man who used his Rolodex as a thinking tool and would talk an idea through with someone for an hour just to hear it out loud. Tommy tells the story of Chuck buying property and building a real studio without telling his uncle first. It opened in 1978 with fifty of the best tube mics in the world, and they recorded in it nonstop. The last stretch is a challenge. Tommy is blunt about what he sees walking into rooms as a producer: he estimates 60% of people in the pews aren't singing at all, and he lays it at the feet of volume and craft rather than sincerity. He points to Cliff Barrows, who never called it worship and always called it community singing, and who could make fifty thousand people feel like a living room. His charge to worship leaders is to be a communicator first, because there are plenty of great players and very few great communicators. He also refuses the easy version of the argument, insisting God isn't an either-or God and that he's all in when a room full of people knows the songs and pours their hearts out. Kurtis closes by asking whether God could do something like the Jesus Movement again. Tommy says yes, and points out that people get serious about finding a raft when the ship starts sinking. Then he tells his own conversion story, which he'd been saving. He was working a factory job, paying off a court fine, living with his parents, one day from starting at his father's construction company. There was a note by the phone about an anti-drug rally. Love Song played three services for the Orange County police department, the same department that had illegally searched him and put him through a year of court. On the third service he ended up on the floor crying for forty-five minutes. Franni Cash spent most of her twenties as one-quarter of We The Kingdom: two Grammy nominations, three Dove Awards, two No. 1 songs. Then she left the family band at the end of 2023 and nearly walked away from music entirely, paralyzed by the fear of not measuring up to what she'd already done. She looked into acting and seriously considered going to school for interior design. What pulled her back was friends passing her demos around behind her back and refusing to delete them. She wrote more than 200 songs to find her own voice and narrowed them to the thirteen on her debut solo album, Here I Am, out September 18. Her rule: only the songs she kept reaching for in the car, not the ones that might scratch an itch in the Christian market. Then the conversation turns to "Raised By Wolves." Franni grew up in a religious cult for twelve years of her childhood, which her family left during her senior year of high school. Her husband suggested the title, drawn from the warning in Matthew 7 about false prophets who come in sheep's clothing but are inwardly ravenous wolves. She wrote it with David Leonard and Andy Cherry, and it was David who spoke the opening line: "be quiet little girl." She had assumed a story that specific would isolate her. Instead she found that when something is that personal it becomes universal, because everyone knows what betrayal from a safe place feels like. On the music itself: songwriter Paul Duncan told her he wasn't worried about her relationship with her family, he was worried about her relationship with music, and sent her on "musical dates" with no goal but enjoyment. Six producers worked on Here I Am, with Franni as executive producer holding it together. Asked what she wants listeners to take away, Franni lands on one word: validation. She talks about narrative therapy and learning that not all twelve of those years were bad, because her grandmothers poured scripture into her, and that's what "Jesus Girl" is really about. She pushes back on the idea that people outside the faith are simply choosing sin. In her experience, someone misrepresented God to them. The episode closes with bravery. On the Brandon Lake tour she felt the Holy Spirit tell her she was brave and should ask to open the second leg, and minutes later her guitar player picked a worn card off the dressing room floor that read, in gold letters, "I am brave."
