Biblical scholars estimate Jesus taught in nearly 150 different outdoor settings; from mountainsides and shorelines to roads, fields, rivers, and wilderness. His parables were full of wildflowers, birds, mustard seeds, fig trees, and stones. The natural world was not a backdrop for His ministry. It was part of the classroom.

Matthew 18:20 offers one of Scripture's most expansive definitions of church: wherever two or three gather in His name, there He is. Not wherever a building has been dedicated, not wherever an ordained service is conducted — wherever. The Greek word for church, ekklesia, means an assembly or gathering. It does not specify a structure. Acts 17:24 confirms what this means for how we understand God's presence: He does not live in temples built by human hands. He gives everyone life and breath and everything else. For the person who finds their spirit most alive under a tree, along the water, or beneath an open sky, that is not a lesser form of worship. It is a meeting with the God who created every stone, every wind, and every wild thing — and who, according to Jesus, would have the very stones cry out in praise if His people ever went silent.

Bible Verse

"For where two or three gather in my name, there am I with them."
— Matthew 18:20, NIV

Ponder Today

  1. Jesus consistently moved toward natural spaces to teach and connect. His Sermon on the Mount, His lessons from a fishing boat, His nights in a garden — the outdoors was not incidental to His ministry. It was central to it.
  2. All of creation bears witness to God. When the Pharisees demanded silence, Jesus said the stones themselves would cry out. Even if every human voice went quiet, creation would continue proclaiming His glory. We live surrounded by that testimony every day.
  3. God does not live in temples built by human hands. Acts 17:24 is clear: He is the Lord of heaven and earth, and He gives everyone life and breath and everything else. His presence is not confined to sanctuaries; it fills the world He made.
  4. We are the living stones, gathered into a spiritual house wherever we meet in His name. First Peter 2:5 describes believers as living stones being built into a spiritual house. The church travels with us, into fields, forests, and anywhere else we gather to praise Him.

A Prayer for You Today

Thank You, God, for always revealing Your beauty and power in all of nature. It is amazing and humbling to know how You draw me closer through sunrises, sunsets, stars, and storms. I am so grateful that You dwell within us, spurring us to gather as a community in Your name. How wonderful it is that I am free to meet with You anywhere — in a worship building, a chapel, an amphitheater, or an open field. I see You in the people You have created, and I also see You in all the wild things everywhere. Help me remember that I can lean on You and learn from You both inside structures built for worship and beyond any walls that have ever been built. Wherever we gather to praise You and love others, we are Your church. In Jesus' name, Amen.
