Sheep, Scripture tells us honestly, tend to wander. We follow without always looking where we are being led. We go our own way. This is exactly why faithful earthly shepherds matter so much, and why the Good Shepherd's heart, described in Jeremiah, is to give His people shepherds after His own heart who lead with knowledge and understanding.

Tonight is an invitation to pray for the shepherds in your life. Not to scrutinize or criticize, but to hold them up before the God who called them. Their work is meant to be a joy, not a burden, and our prayers are one of the most direct ways we contribute to that.

Ponder Tonight

Jesus's threefold charge to Peter to feed His sheep reveals how personally He takes the care of His people. Those called to shepherd are carrying something that belongs to the heart of God.

Pastors and their families often carry burdens that are invisible to their congregations, which is why praying for them specifically and regularly is one of the most important things a church member can do.

Hebrews 13:17 frames the relationship between shepherds and those they lead as a mutual one. The faithfulness of the shepherd is supported by the prayers and cooperation of the flock, which means the health of the whole community is connected.

Sheep wander. We are reminded of this not as a condemnation but as an honest description of our need for faithful leadership and our responsibility to support those who provide it.

Tonight's Scripture

"Have confidence in your leaders and submit to their authority, because they keep watch over you as those who must give an account." — Hebrews 13:17, NIV

"Feed my sheep." — John 21:17, NIV

Your Evening Prayer

Father,

Thank You for the shepherds You have chosen to care for us, Your sheep. For those You have called but who are reluctant to step out in faith, help them surrender to Your will and calling. Strengthen and embolden our local pastors and pastors around the world to faithfully watch over, care for, and feed Your people.

Lead them, Lord, as they lead us. Guard their families. Sustain them in the hard and hidden moments of ministry. Let their work be a joy and not a burden, and remind them that the God who called them is also the One who sustains them.

May we be a people who pray for our shepherds as faithfully as we benefit from their service.

In Jesus' name, Amen.
