A Prayer When the Darkness Feels Heavier than Usual
We measure so much of life by the obstacles we face. The hardships stack up, the darkness seems more prevalent than ever, and it becomes easy to add up the negatives and stay under the cloud the enemy hopes will keep us trapped. Why does it have to be this way? Why another roadblock? Why does the enemy keep attacking? Why do the most important roles of my life seem dismissed by the world?
But what if we measured life by God’s faithfulness instead?
The story of the ninth plague in Exodus 10 offers a striking picture of what that looks like. Darkness fell over Egypt, a darkness so thick it could be felt. No one could see anyone else. No one rose from their place for three days. And yet all the people of Israel had light where they lived. Darkness surrounded them, but it did not consume them.
Imagine waking up to that. Looking outside your home into complete blackness, and then looking around at the light still resting over your own dwelling. The obstacles of their story were many, and the grumbling was real. But laid out on the page, God’s faithfulness shows up ten times over.
It does not mean we escape the tactics of the evil one or the obstacles ahead. It means the darkness does not get to be the only thing we measure by. When we look for God’s steadfastness in the middle of the hard seasons, we find it, and it draws us closer to the light and farther from the darkness that wants to consume us.
First Timothy 2:1-2 calls us to keep praying, petitioning, interceding, and giving thanks in every situation. Not only asking, but praising. Not only enduring, but pointing to what God has done.
Tonight, take the darkness you feel to the Lord. Remember where He has been faithful. And choose to be a light where He has placed you, even when the darkness feels heavy around you.
Ponder Tonight
Measuring life by God’s faithfulness rather than by the obstacles we face does not deny hardship. It changes what we give our attention to, and attention shapes how we experience everything else.
Israel was covered in light while darkness filled the land around them. God’s protection did not remove them from the surrounding darkness, but it distinguished them within it. The same is true for those who belong to Him now.
It is easy to relate to the Israelites in their grumbling. Honest questions about hardship are not the problem. The invitation is to let those questions lead us back to remembering who has been faithful before.
We are called to pray in every season and to share how God’s steadfastness has carried us. Our testimony of His faithfulness becomes light for others walking through their own dark stretches.
Tonight’s Scripture
“First of all, then, I urge that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and thanksgivings be made for all people, for kings and all who are in high positions, that we may lead a peaceful and quiet life, godly and dignified in every way.” — 1 Timothy 2:1-2, ESV
Your Evening Prayer
Father,
Thank You for reminding us that we are called to measure our lives by Your faithfulness. We do not need to give our attention to the darkness that tries to consume those who love You.
Help us seek You as we journey through our days, clinging to the truth that You are leading and guiding us even when day-to-day situations feel challenging. Let us be a light to others, and help us invite them to see Your faithfulness in their own stories.
In Jesus’ name, Amen.
