Sheep will not lie down unless certain conditions are met. They cannot be afraid. They cannot be hungry. They cannot be at odds with the rest of the flock. And they cannot be tormented by insects buzzing around their heads. If any one of those things is present, the sheep stays on its feet, even when completely exhausted. The weariness is real, but rest is simply not possible while something is still buzzing.

Most of us recognize ourselves in that description.

The body is done. The day is over. And yet the mind stays on its feet, replaying a conversation, circling a worry, rehearsing an unfinished thing that feels bigger than the darkness outside the window. We are exhausted and unable to rest at the same time.

What David says in Psalm 23 is quietly remarkable. He does not say the Lord invites him to lie down. He says, He makes me lie down. The Good Shepherd does not wait for the sheep to figure out rest on their own. He creates the conditions for it and then sees to it that the sheep actually stop. The lying down is something the Shepherd does, not something the sheep achieves.

David knew sheep from the inside. He had grown up with them, walked ahead of them to find water, driven off everything that threatened them. When he calls the Lord his Shepherd, he knows from experience that the sheep’s job is not to strategize or solve or find its own quiet waters. The sheep’s job is simply to trust the one in charge.

Tonight, you do not have to create your own peace. You do not have to drive off what is buzzing. That was never your job. Your Shepherd knows every issue in your heart. He has already gone ahead to where the quiet waters are. He is willing and able to make you lie down.

Let Him.

Ponder Tonight

The detail that He makes the sheep lie down, rather than inviting them or waiting for them to settle, reveals something important about how rest actually works. It is not something we achieve through sufficient effort. It is something the Shepherd provides when we stop trying to be our own shepherd.

The shepherd walks ahead of the sheep to the still water before the sheep ever arrive there. Whatever tomorrow holds, God has already gone before it. The water is already there.

Naming what is buzzing around the mind tonight and giving it to the Shepherd, rather than continuing to manage it alone, is the one thing available to the sheep. The driving off belongs to Him.

Rest is not a reward for resolving everything before sleep. It is what becomes possible when we stop insisting on being in charge and trust the One who actually is.

Tonight’s Scripture

“The LORD is my shepherd, I lack nothing. He makes me lie down in green pastures, he leads me beside quiet waters, he refreshes my soul.” — Psalm 23:1-3, NIV

Your Evening Prayer

Father,

You are my Shepherd. How I need You to make me lie down. I have been on my feet all day, and even now I cannot seem to settle. The unfinished things buzz about my head. There is fear I have not even named because I keep trying to be my own shepherd.

Help me recognize that rest is not something I have to accomplish. You are walking ahead of me. You already know where the quiet waters are. Free me from the things that will not leave me alone and let me lie down in the green pastures You have prepared. Refresh my soul while I sleep.

In Jesus’ name, Amen.
