A Prayer for the Night Before Change

The book of Isaiah pivots at chapter 40 with two tender words. "Comfort, comfort my people." After nearly forty chapters of hard and sobering truth, the heart of the Father turns toward consolation, and what follows is some of the most beautiful writing in the entire Bible.

Tonight's verse lives in that section of comfort. And it speaks directly into the in-between.

Maybe you looked ahead to this point in the year expecting things to look different by now. The prayer still unanswered. The trial still ongoing. The deep water still surrounding you and the fire still burning, and yet you are not on the other side of it. The in-between seasons are some of the hardest, suspended between submitting to God's will and crying out for more faith, learning contentment while still honestly asking for things to change.

Isaiah 43:2 does not say if you pass through the waters. It says when. Trials are not an aberration of the life of faith. They are part of it. And the promise woven into that reality is not that the waters will recede immediately or that the fire will be extinguished on request. It is five words that change everything: I will be with you.

Ponder Tonight

The phrase "with you" appears throughout Scripture with remarkable frequency. God's companionship in trial is not incidental to His character. It is one of His most consistent and deliberate promises to His people across every generation.

The in-between seasons, where we are neither in the midst of obvious crisis nor clearly on the other side of it, are some of the most spiritually formative places we will ever stand. What we learn about God there is often what we could not have learned anywhere else.

Tonight's Scripture

"When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and when you pass through the rivers, they will not sweep over you. When you walk through the fire, you will not be burned; the flames will not set you ablaze." — Isaiah 43:2, NIV

Your Evening Prayer

Father,

Thank You that no matter what we go through in this life, You promise to be with us. We confess that we often want You to deliver us from hard situations immediately. Grow us to be like Jesus, who said in the Garden of Gethsemane, not what I will, but what You will.

Help us trust that in the midst of uncertainty, You have a plan, and according to Romans 8:28, that plan is good. Meet us in the fire tonight, not just outside of it. Be the fourth presence in the places where we feel most alone and most surrounded.

We rest in You tonight.
