Strength for the Work Right in Front of You

There is a character in Norton Juster's classic book The Phantom Tollbooth named Milo, described this way: when he was in school he longed to be out, and when he was out he longed to be in. On the way he thought about coming home, and coming home he thought about going. A restless, perpetual elsewhere, never quite present to what was directly in front of him.

Most of us know that feeling, though our version of it rarely comes from boredom. It comes from worry.

Paul's instruction to the Thessalonians speaks directly into that cycle. Never get tired of doing good. He was addressing people who had become so distracted by what was happening around them that they had stopped faithfully engaging with what was right in front of them. Busy, perhaps, but not productively present. And his remedy was not a new strategy or a better plan. It was a return to the work already given, done with faithfulness and focus, as unto the Lord.

The worries pulling us away from the present task are often real and worth addressing. Plans need to be made. Wisdom is required. But there is a meaningful difference between wise planning and anxious distraction, between prudent attention to the future and the kind of fretting that makes it impossible to do the good work waiting in front of us today.

Galatians 6:9 adds the longer view: at the proper time, we will reap a harvest if we do not give up. The farmer does not abandon the field in spring because the harvest is months away. He tends what is in front of him, faithfully and without abandoning the present work for the anxiety of what is not yet visible.

Tonight, the work God has for tomorrow is best prepared for by resting well tonight. And the work of today, however ordinary or incomplete, was worth doing faithfully.

Ponder Tonight

The Thessalonian busybodies were not lazy exactly. They were distracted, too focused on what was happening around them to faithfully engage with the work directly in front of them. That is a form of unfaithfulness that is easy to overlook precisely because it feels like productivity.

Worry and focus cannot occupy the same space for long. When anxiety about what might come next grows loud enough, it crowds out the ability to do excellent, attentive work in the present moment.

The farmer's rhythm is one of the most honest pictures of faithful work in Scripture. Preparing soil, planting, watering, and waiting without guarantees, continuing to tend what has been entrusted regardless of whether the harvest is yet visible.

Working as unto the Lord is not just a motivational phrase. It is a reorientation of purpose that frees us from needing immediate results or external validation to keep showing up faithfully to the work we have been given.

Tonight's Scripture

"As for the rest of you, dear brothers and sisters, never get tired of doing good." — 2 Thessalonians 3:13, NLT

"Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up." — Galatians 6:9, NIV

Your Evening Prayer

Lord,

You are always working, and what wonderful deeds You do. As we prepare for tomorrow with all its responsibilities, help us develop greater attention to what You have called us to do in the present, rather than losing focus to the tasks of next week or the anxious questions of what if.

Give us strength for the work right in front of us. Help us complete it faithfully and with excellence, not for our own recognition but for Your glory. When worry pulls our attention away from the present task, gently draw it back. And when the harvest is not yet visible, help us keep tending what has been entrusted to us without giving up.

In Jesus' name, Amen.
