Resting in God's Care When I Feel Forgotten (Psalm 91)

Evening Scripture

Psalm 91
Whoever dwells in the shelter of the Most High will rest in the shadow of the Almighty. I will say of the Lord, “He is my refuge and my fortress, my God, in whom I trust.”
Surely he will save you from the fowler’s snare and from the deadly pestilence. He will cover you with his feathers, and under his wings you will find refuge; his faithfulness will be your shield and rampart. You will not fear the terror of night, nor the arrow that flies by day, nor the pestilence that stalks in the darkness, nor the plague that destroys at midday. A thousand may fall at your side, ten thousand at your right hand, but it will not come near you.You will only observe with your eyes and see the punishment of the wicked.

If you say, “The Lord is my refuge,” and you make the Most High your dwelling, no harm will overtake you, no disaster will come near your tent. For he will command his angels concerning you to guard you in all your ways; they will lift you up in their hands, so that you will not strike your foot against a stone. You will tread on the lion and the cobra; you will trample the great lion and the serpent.

“Because he loves me,” says the Lord, “I will rescue him; I will protect him, for he acknowledges my name.He will call on me, and I will answer him; I will be with him in trouble, I will deliver him and honor him. With long life I will satisfy him and show him my salvation.”

Evening Reflection

At times, it’s easy for us to feel overlooked, taken for granted, or cast aside by those around us. Whether it’s by a spouse, friend, parent, child, co-worker, or even a pastor at times, we can feel forgotten. Many of us believe that once we marry, have children, or achieve professional success, we’ll never feel forgotten again. Yet, so often, many of us discover that we were sadly mistaken, that being in the limelight fades, and those we thought loved us the most are now far away.

Still, in those times when we feel forgotten, Psalm 91 reminds us that we can turn to God, knowing He never forgets us. Although others we thought would always be there for us may be distant, He keeps us close, watching over and protecting us, shielding us with His faithfulness. As Isaiah 49:15-16 reassures us, “Can a mother forget the baby at her breast and have no compassion on the child she has borne? Though she may forget, I will not forget you! See, I have engraved you on the palms of My hands; your walls are ever before Me.” Whereas others may ignore our calls, like a mother harkens her ears to her newborn child, He listens and answers us, staying near and with us through troubles and the darkest of nights. During these times, we can rest in His care, safe and secure from the chaos of the day and the fear of night.

God is our ever refuge and fortress, covering us with His feathers, hiding us under His wings, and commanding His angels to encamp over us, wherever we go.

Evening Prayer

God,
Thank you for keeping me close to You, for not ever forgetting me, even when it seems like everyone around me has forgotten. Help me remember that You are near, so that I turn towards You, calling out to You and reaching towards Your loving arms, which are open to me. Whenever I feel left by the wayside, Lord, lead me to rest in Your tender care over my heart and my life, remembering that You are forever here for me.
