American elections are way too nasty. Political ads and campaign speeches are filled with attacks, condemnations, criticisms, verbal assaults, unproven accusations, and even false charges that candidates from all major political parties— including incumbents—lob at each other. Our Constitution guarantees us free speech, but that right should never be taken as a license to slander. Like falsely yelling “Fire!” in a crowded theater, slander is not protected free speech. We now live in a highly loquacious, instantaneous, intractable mediated culture, and a cowboy named Steroidal Slander is on the loose. When the character of another is involved, he’s quick on the draw. What’s the remedy? For one, someone needs to model a higher standard! And of all people, those who name the name of Christ who hold public office, ought to be the ones who model that higher standard! Christ must make a difference in this area of the life of the believer. Ephesians 4:31 states, Let all … slander be put away from you. This passage is our study for this week; I’m hoping as we better understand what putting away slander means, we can holster our guns. When we possess a personal relationship with God via the regenerating work of Jesus Christ on our behalf, we become indwelled by the Holy Spirit, who simultaneously leads us into all truth. Secular journalists, liberal theologians, and bloggers have recently concocted the term “Christian Nationalist.” With a broad brush they are branding many well-meaning Christians serving in public office with this newly coined pejorative in an attempt to marginalize their influence in the public square. What is a Christian Nationalist? Is every Evangelical in office a Christian Nationalist? What do the name callers mean when they charge you with this? By painting—increasingly all—public servants who trust in Christ for their salvation as “Christian Nationalists” they hope to cripple your influence, instill fear in the voting populous, silence Christians, eradicate biblical influence, and intimidate believers from even participating in the political process. This is nothing less than yet another attempt to cancel Christians and abolish their biblical worldview from our nation. Christian Nationalism is a valid term, but the problem is, it summarizes three faulty theological constructs that you need to be aware of and know why they are aberrant. Here then is a newly minted term to describe ages-old really bad theology—theology you don’t want to have anything to do with! I would like to challenge any Christian who may be attracted to this flawed concept to read this study and learn why Christian Nationalism and the corrupt and unbiblical theology it was based upon should be summarily rejected by true believers. I promise, this Bible study will unpack all of this for you. It is important to know what all this means and why you should steer clear of it. Without love as the center of your faith, your trajectory in office will be less than it could be otherwise. For you to be influential, your spouse, family members, and colleagues must know in their heart of hearts that, first and foremost, you are a loving person. Paul states in the opening portions of 1 Corinthians 13, without love I am nothing. What then are the defining aspects of love that both you and I need to be continually working on and growing in? The Scriptures tell us to Be strong in the Lord and the strength of His might. In the same passage (Ephesians 6:10–11), we are informed as to what God equates with being strong in the Lord. It is this: You will be able to stand firm against the schemes of the devil. It follows then, that understanding the various schemes of the devil is a consequence of being strong in the Lord. Put another way, if you are not spiritually discerning and understanding of Satan’s ways then you are not very strong in the Lord. What are the ploys of the devil that dupe so many people— and how can you see through them?
